Shirting under 160 GSM

Lightweight cotton and blended shirtings under 160 g/m² — poplins, voiles, cambrics and lawns for shirts, blouses and linings.

What you are choosing between

Under 160 g/m² the differences that matter are construction and finish, not weight alone. Poplin is a tight, plain-weave cloth with a smooth, flat face — the default for a crisp formal shirt. Cambric is also plain-woven but softer and more matte, and takes a peached or brushed finish well. Lawn and voile are lighter and more open again: lawn is fine and semi-crisp, voile is sheerer and drapes, which makes both better for blouses, layering and linings than for a structured collar.

Two qualities can share a GSM figure and behave completely differently once yarn count, sett and finish are accounted for. If a specific hand-feel matters, the reliable way to settle it is a swatch rather than a spec sheet.

What to specify when you enquire

The fastest route to an accurate answer is the end product (shirt, blouse, lining), the target GSM band, the finish you want, whether you need it dyed, printed or ready-for-dye, and your quantity for both sampling and bulk. Width and shrinkage tolerance matter if you are matching an existing block.

Dyeing minimums on this weight band start at 1,500 m per colour, because everything under 160 GSM falls in the lighter of the two bands. If that is above your run, the usual routes are an available dyed or RFD quality rather than a fresh dye lot, or digital print from 100 m per colour, per design.
