Workwear twills & drills

Durable cotton twills, drills and gabardines for uniforms, workwear and utility garments — the heavier, hard-wearing weaves.

What you are choosing between

Twill, drill and gabardine are all twill-family weaves, distinguished by how tightly and steeply the diagonal runs and how much weight sits behind it. A standard cotton twill is the general-purpose choice: it drapes better than a plain weave of the same weight and hides soiling well. Drill is heavier and more tightly constructed, which is why it holds up in uniform and utility use. Gabardine runs a steeper, finer twill line and presses to a cleaner surface, so it suits tailored workwear where appearance matters as much as durability.

Chino sits alongside these as a lighter, softer twill — comfortable, but not the choice where abrasion is the design constraint.

What to specify when you enquire

Tell us the garment and the wear it has to survive, the GSM band you are targeting, and any performance requirement — colourfastness to washing, shrinkage tolerance, or a finish such as water-repellency. If the garment will be industrially laundered, say so early: it changes both the construction and the finish we would put forward.

These weights generally sit at 160 GSM and above, where a fresh dye lot starts at 3,000 m per colour. Uniform programmes usually clear that comfortably; for a smaller first run, an available dyed quality is normally the more sensible route.
