It is whether the supplier can name the stage the clock starts from — and show what was done before the quote to make the number real. A quoted window backed by a confirmed slot is a booking; the same window backed by an assumption is a hope with a date on it.
- It names the starting stage. "45 days" from order placement and "45 days" from lab-dip approval are different promises, and the difference is the length of your approval loops.
- It states the greige position. Whether loom-state cloth exists already, or whether 30-60 days of weaving sits inside the figure. A quote that does not say which has not decided yet.
- It states the slot status. Whether mill and processing slots are confirmed against your order, or assumed from general capacity.
- It states its approval assumptions. How many lab-dip or strike-off rounds the figure allows for, and what happens to the date when a round is rejected — agreed before it happens, not argued after.
- It states what it excludes. Buyer approval time, customs clearance and the inland leg sit outside every production figure; a timeline that appears to include them for free has simply not mentioned them.
What should you ask a supplier about a quoted lead time?
Six questions separate a timeline from a number. None is confrontational — a supplier working to real schedules can answer all six from the order file.
- Which stage does this figure start from? If the answer is vague, the figure is decorative.
- Does the greige exist? And if not, does the figure contain the 30-60 day weaving stage — with a loom slot confirmed, or assumed?
- What is the approval sequence, and how many rounds does the quote allow? Swatch, lab dip or strike-off, approval, bulk — and the date consequence of a rejected round, stated in advance.
- Which figures are ranges, and what moves them? The honest answers are scheduling, season, finishing route and lot structure.
