Air-Jet, Rapier or Shuttle: What the Loom Type Means for Your Fabric

The loom type — air-jet, rapier or shuttle — decides how the weft is inserted, and through that the selvedge you receive, the defect profile to inspect for, and which constructions run economically. Air-jet is the workhorse for long runs of standard cotton constructions; rapier handles delicate, fancy or stretch wefts; shuttle survives for the woven closed selvedge some end uses demand. It is a routing decision, not a quality grade.

What changes for the buyer with loom type?

Three things on the cloth you receive trace directly to the loom: the selvedge (woven closed, tucked-in, or fringed — set by how the weft is carried), the defect profile (each insertion method fails in its own characteristic ways), and the economics of your construction (a weft the insertion method handles badly weaves slowly and expensively, or not at all). Buyers treat loom type as a quality grade — shuttle meaning old and bad, air-jet meaning modern and good. It is not a grade: each type is the right answer to a different construction and end use, which is why all three are still in service.

How do you identify the loom from the selvedge?

The selvedge is the loom's signature, and reading it is a thirty-second diagnostic on any roll or swatch:

  • 1. Look at the edge yarns. A smooth, continuous edge where the weft visibly turns back into the cloth is a woven closed selvedge — shuttle.
  • 2. Look for tucked ends. A firm edge with short weft tails folded back into the last few warp ends is a tuck-in selvedge — a shuttleless loom (air-jet, rapier, projectile or water-jet).
  • 3. Look for a gauze-like binding. A pair of crossing threads locking trimmed weft ends is a leno selvedge — also a shuttleless loom. The selvedge tells you shuttle versus shuttleless; it does not identify which shuttleless type.
  • 4. A visible fringe of cut ends means the weft is trimmed at the edge — again a shuttleless loom, before the edge finishing.
  • Air-jet and rapier cannot be reliably separated by selvedge alone — both trim and secure the weft. If the distinction matters to your programme, ask; do not deduce.

Why is the width you want not available on every loom?

Because a width limit is a property of the individual machine installed, not of the loom family. Each loom is built to a working reed width, and a mill's fleet is a specific inventory of machines at specific widths — so "can rapier weave my width?" has no general answer, and any published maximum-width table is describing someone's fleet, not a law of the technology. The honest procedure is to state the finished width you need and let the sourcing partner confirm which partner-mill route reaches it; weaving wider than needed and cutting down is sometimes the economical answer, and that too is a route decision, not a loom-family fact.

Which loom suits which end use?

  • Standard cotton and blend greige at volume — sheeting, poplin, shirting, twill, drill: air-jet, for run speed and consistency; it is the most preferred route across partner mills wherever the weft allows.
  • Stretch wefts, slubs, fancy and technical wefts — anything an air stream carries badly: rapier, whose gripper handles the weft positively.
  • Selvedge-critical cloth — where the woven closed edge is a feature of the product, classically selvedge denim: shuttle.
  • Undecided? Specify the cloth — construction, weft character, selvedge requirement — and let the loom follow. Specifying the loom first, without a reason on the cloth, only narrows the routes that can quote.

What should you ask when the loom type is not stated?

  • "What selvedge will I receive?" — the answer identifies the loom family and tells you what your cutting room will handle.
  • "Which loom route will my construction run on, and why?" — a reasoned answer names the weft or selvedge driver; an evasive one is worth noting.
  • "Can this route reach my finished width?" — per machine, per mill; never assume from the loom family.
  • "Does the defect profile change my inspection?" — the characteristic-defect column above is what any agreed body inspection should be looking for.

What is the difference between air-jet and rapier looms?

The weft carrier. Air-jet looms insert the weft on compressed air — fastest on standard, uniform wefts. Rapier looms carry the weft with a gripper — slower, but positive control handles stretch, slub, fancy and delicate wefts air cannot carry reliably. Both produce a cut, secured selvedge.
