Cambric
Cambric is a lightweight, closely woven plain-weave cotton with a smooth, soft face, typically landing around 60–90 GSM. In Pakistan's trade it is a fabric family rather than a fixed specification — the name fixes neither yarn count nor density. It is used where a garment needs softness and drape rather than structure: kurtas, kidswear, light summer styles, printed unstitched and linings.

What cambric is used for
Cambric is chosen where a garment needs softness and drape rather than structure. At roughly 60–90 GSM it is light enough to fall close to the body and fine enough to take detailed print, which is why it recurs in the same set of end uses across Pakistan's trade.
- Kurtas and unstitched: the use we are asked for most often. The soft hand suits loose cuts, and the smooth face carries printed detail without the print looking broken up by texture.
- Kidswear: light weight and a soft finish, with the opacity caveat below applying more strictly than it does on adult styles.
- Light summer dresses and blouses: where drape matters more than body. If the design needs the garment to hold its own shape, poplin is usually the better base.
- Linings: a fine, smooth, low-bulk layer that sits under a heavier shell without adding stiffness.
Where cambric is the wrong answer is equally consistent: structured shirting, anything needing crispness that survives washing, and any pale shade that has to be opaque on its own. Cambric, poplin or lawn?
These three overlap constantly, and the overlap is commercial rather than technical — they are market names, and different markets draw the lines in different places. What separates them in practice is the combination of yarn fineness, thread density and what the finished cloth is meant to do, not any single figure.

A construction like 60×60/90×88 would normally be sold as lawn in our market rather than cambric, even though a buyer comparing swatches might not separate them by hand alone. Judge by full specification — composition, construction, finished GSM, finished width and finish — not by the name on the order.
Why our cambric is lighter than the cambric you have read about
If you research cambric from the UK, Europe or the US, you will usually see it quoted at roughly 100–130 GSM. Our band is 60–90 GSM. Both figures are honest — they describe different cloth sold under the same word, and the gap has caused more rejected orders than any technical fault we have seen on this base.
"Cambric" is not a protected specification anywhere. It is a commercial family name, and each market draws its boundaries where its own trade settled. In Pakistan the lawn–cambric–poplin ladder is packed into a narrower, lighter range than the Western batiste–cambric–broadcloth ladder, so what a European supplier calls cambric often sits where we would say poplin, and what we call cambric sits where a European buyer might expect lawn. The name moved; the cloth did not.

This is why we ask for a physical cutting rather than a market name, and why we quote finished GSM on every offer. If you send us the word, we can only guess which ladder you are standing on; if you send us the cloth, there is nothing to guess. Where you have no cutting, tell us the GSM you are expecting and we will tell you which of our qualities that actually is.
Why cambric is a low-MOQ base
Our dyeing minimum is decided by fabric weight, and it steps at 160 GSM: 1,500m per colour below it, 3,000m per colour at and above it. Cambric's ≈ 60–90 GSM band sits well clear of that step — it is not marginal the way t-shirt jersey is at 150–180 GSM — so a custom dyed cambric colourway starts at 1,500m per colour and stays there regardless of how the finishing run lands.
- Dyed cambric: 1,500m per colour. Each shade is a separate dye lot, so four colourways is 6,000m, not 1,500m.
- Digital or sublimation print on cambric: 100m per colour, per design — the lowest-commitment route into a custom look, and cambric's smooth face takes fine detail well.
- Rotary print: 3,000m, which becomes relevant at repeat-programme scale rather than at launch.
- Available cambric qualities: no development minimum at all, because the cloth already exists. For a first launch this is usually the right answer.
That combination — a light base that cannot drift above the dyeing step, plus a smooth face that suits digital printing — is why cambric is often the cheapest way for a small brand into a custom-looking programme. If your reference is quoted in ounces, convert with 1 oz/yd² = 33.906 GSM: a 2.5 oz cotton is ≈ 85 GSM, in band.

What to specify when sourcing cambric
Because "cambric" fixes so little on its own, a workable brief has to name the rest:
- End use — kurta, kidswear, lining, printed unstitched. This decides whether the weight band even suits.
- Finished GSM target — and accept it as an outcome of construction and finishing, confirmed on an approved sample, not an independent input.
- Opacity requirement, at the intended shade. The line most often missing from a cambric brief, and the one that causes rejections.
- Finish — soft, peach, calendered. Cambric's hand moves a long way on finish alone.
- Finished width you need, and any shrinkage or colourfastness standard to meet.
- Coloration route — dyed, digital or rotary. This decides the base you should be buying in the first place.

In cooler months cambric more often appears as a lining under a heavier shell than as the outer cloth.

Is cambric just a lighter poplin?
Not exactly. Cambric is lighter and softer, but the difference comes from yarn, density, finish and intended end use together rather than weight alone. The two bands meet at roughly 90 GSM, and after finishing a heavy cambric and a light poplin can sit either side of that line and still feel closer to each other than to the middle of their own band.
What is the minimum order for custom cambric?
Because cambric sits at roughly 60–90 GSM it falls under the 160 GSM threshold, so dyeing starts at 1,500m per colour. Digital and sublimation printing start at 100m per colour per design, and rotary printing at 3,000m. Below those figures, an available cambric quality carries no development minimum at all.
Is cambric see-through?
