Cotton Twill

Cotton twill is a diagonal-ribbed weave: each weft passes over two or more warp ends, giving drape and tear resistance plain weave cannot match at equal weight. The ratio (2/1, 3/1) says how much warp shows on the face; S and Z name the diagonal's direction. Ours runs from 150 GSM chino bands to heavy 3/1 workwear cloth; dyeing starts at 1,500 m per colour under 160 GSM, 3,000 m from 160 GSM.

What a twill actually is

A twill is defined by a single move at the loom: each weft yarn passes over two or more warp ends before it dips under, and every following pick shifts that interlacing one end sideways. The sideways step is what draws the diagonal line — the wale — across the face of the cloth. Plain weave has no step: every pick runs over one, under one, every yarn is locked at every crossing, and the surface is flat and gridded. The diagonal is not decoration; it is the visible record of how the cloth is bound.

Interlacing less often changes the cloth in two directions at once. Yarns that are bound at fewer points can be packed closer together, so a twill carries more yarn — more weight, more cover — into the same area than a plain weave in the same counts. And yarns bound at fewer points can move: they shift under load, and at a tear they bunch together and share the strain rather than breaking one thread at a time. Density plus mobility is the whole commercial argument for twill. It is how a cloth becomes heavy without becoming board-stiff, and strong without being brittle.

That is why the trouser-to-workwear range of cotton weaving is dominated by this one family. When a garment needs weight the wearer can move in — chinos, work trousers, jackets, uniforms — the construction is almost always a twill, and the questions that remain are the ratio, the direction, the fibre and the finish. This page takes those in order, then works through the two twill constructions we publish.

What do 2/1 and 3/1 twill mean?

The fraction describes what the warp does. In a 3/1 twill each warp end passes over three picks and under one, so roughly three-quarters of the face you see and touch is warp yarn. In a 2/1 twill each end passes over two and under one — about two-thirds warp on the face. Both are warp-faced twills; the ratio sets how strongly the warp dominates.

More warp on the face means longer floats, and the floats change almost everything a buyer notices. The surface becomes smoother and more lustrous; abrasion lands on the warp rather than the weft; and the face colour is whatever the warp carries — which is exactly the trick denim plays with an indigo warp over an undyed weft. Fewer interlacings also let a 3/1 pack denser and heavier than a 2/1 in the same yarns. The 2/1 answers back with a more frequent bind: a flatter, tighter, more locked cloth that suits lighter weights and a quieter wale.

Neither ratio is better — they are different tools. Our own published workwear construction is a 3/1 precisely because a hard-wearing cloth wants the denser packing and wants the wear taken on the warp; it appears as a worked example below.

What are S-twill and Z-twill?

S and Z name the direction the diagonal runs, read from the middle stroke of each letter: a Z-twill's wale climbs from bottom-left to top-right, an S-twill's from bottom-right to top-left. Nothing else changes. The same construction woven S or woven Z weighs the same, wears the same and dyes the same — direction is a visual property, not a performance one.

It stops being cosmetic in three situations. First, paired panels: trousers are cut in mirrored left and right pieces, and wherever two twill faces meet at a seam the eye can compare the diagonals. Second, brushed or napped finishes, where the lie of the raise interacts with the lie of the wale. Third, matching an existing garment — if the reference runs Z, order Z, because a repeat cut against an S cloth will pair differently at the seams even though no number on the specification has moved. Twill, drill, canvas or duck?

These four names cause a disproportionate share of wrong swatches, and the confusion has a simple shape: buyers assume they are four weaves. They are not. Drill is a twill; canvas and duck are plain weaves. Heaviness is what the four have in common, and heaviness is the one property that tells you nothing about the interlacing.

The distinction earns its keep at specification time. Canvas holds its shape because of that locked structure — stiffness by construction — which suits bags, aprons and cloth that must stand. A heavy twill is heavy but mobile, which suits cloth that must be worn. So when a brief says "canvas" but the garment is a work trouser, the cloth actually being described is almost certainly a drill — that is, a twill — and swatching the literal request wastes a development round. Gabardine sits at the opposite, refined end of the same twill family whose coarse end is drill.

Worked example: our workwear twill

Our published workwear construction reads: 14 × 14 / 82 × 48, 3/1 S-twill or Z-twill, 60% polyester / 40% cotton, dual-portion dyed (vat route on the cotton), finish per customer requirement. Unpacked: 14 × 14 are the warp and weft yarn counts — stout yarns at the coarse end of the count scale — and 82 × 48 are the ends and picks per inch, with far more warp ends than weft picks, exactly as a warp-faced 3/1 wants.

The blend is the engineering. Polyester carries the tear and tensile load; cotton keeps the cloth breathable — that division of labour is the published logic of the 60/40, and it is why the cloth can take a working life without wearing like a plastic sheet. Two fibres also mean two dye systems, which is what "dual-portion dyed" declares: the polyester portion and the cotton portion are dyed separately, with the cotton taken by the vat route — the dye class reached for when colour has to survive heavy sweat and repeated hard laundering. Worked example: our chino twill

Our chino programme publishes three constructions: 30 × 30 + 40D, 30 × 16 + 70D and 21 × 16 + 70D, all at 98% cotton / 2% elastane, running 150–230 GSM finished. The +40D and +70D name the elastane filament in denier — the thickness of the stretch filament itself, not a third cotton count. Which direction the elastane runs — warp, weft or both — is confirmed per quality, because it decides which way the finished trouser gives; if your pattern depends on it, say so in the brief. The three constructions ladder from the finest (30 × 30 + 40D) to the coarsest (21 × 16 + 70D), and they differ as much in where the weight sits as in the figure on paper.

Two working notes on that band. First, 150–230 GSM is a finished weight, never greige — compare it only against other finished figures, for the reason the sourcing-floor note below spells out. Second, the band straddles our dyeing step at 160 GSM, so the dye-lot minimum depends on where a given quality's finished weight lands: 1,500 m per colour under 160 GSM, 3,000 m per colour at 160 GSM and above, confirmed at inquiry. Reading twill weights honestly

Cotton twill has no single weight — the family runs from shirting-weight cloth to heavy workwear constructions, so every band you see, including ours, is indicative. The figure that binds is the finished GSM confirmed on an approved sample, and production is held to it at GSM ±5, with finished width held at ±3 inches — inches, never centimetres — and ends matching the approved sample.

If your reference is quoted in ounces per square yard, convert at 1 oz/yd² = 33.906 GSM: a 7 oz twill is ≈ 237 GSM and an 8 oz is ≈ 271 GSM — both comfortably above the 160 GSM dyeing step. And whenever a quoted weight looks surprisingly light or heavy against a competitor's figure, ask which state it was weighed in before concluding anything. The note below is about exactly that.

Minimums, lead times and the low-MOQ route

Twill minimums are set per process, not per fabric name. Custom dyeing runs at 1,500 m per colour under 160 GSM and 3,000 m per colour at 160 GSM and above — and each shade is a separate dye lot, so a four-colour chino programme is four lots, not one. Digital printing starts at 100 m per colour, per design, and rotary printing at 3,000 m. Available twill qualities carry no development minimum at all, which is usually the honest first answer for a launch.

On timing: greige runs 30–60 days; dyeing 30–60 days after lab-dip approval; printing 20–40 days after sample approval — all varying by season and confirmed per order. The approval is the gate in every case, which is why chasing the calendar before the lab dip is signed off shortens nothing. What to specify when sourcing cotton twill

Because "twill" names a family rather than a cloth, a workable brief has to fix the rest:

  • End use — chino, work trouser, jacket, uniform. This selects the ratio, the blend and the weight band before anything else does.
  • Construction, not just GSM — counts and density plus the ratio (2/1 or 3/1). Two cloths at the same GSM can be different fabrics; the construction is the specification, and the GSM is its outcome.
  • Twill direction — S or Z, wherever panels pair, the finish is brushed, or you are matching an existing garment.
  • Fibre blend — 100% cotton, 98/2 cotton–elastane for stretch, 60/40 polyester–cotton for hard wear. The blend also decides the dye route, including dual-portion dyeing where two fibres run together.
  • Finished GSM target and finished width — confirmed on an approved sample, then held at GSM ±5 and width ±3 inches.
  • Finish — run per customer requirement, and capable of moving both the hand and the finished weight.
  • Colour plan — how many shades, remembering each shade is a separate dye lot carrying its own minimum.

Frequently asked questions

What does 3/1 twill mean?

3/1 means each warp end passes over three weft picks and under one, so about three-quarters of the cloth's face is warp yarn. The long warp floats give a smoother, denser, more lustrous face than a 2/1, put most of the abrasion on the warp, and let the yarns pack heavier in the same counts — which is why 3/1 is the classic structure for denim and for our published 14 × 14 / 82 × 48 workwear twill.

What is the difference between twill and drill?

Drill is a twill, so the difference is one of degree rather than of weave: drill conventionally names a coarser, harder-wearing twill — typically 2/1 or 3/1 in stout yarns — used for workwear and uniforms. Ask for the actual construction rather than the name: a specification like 14 × 14 / 82 × 48, 3/1 tells you what the cloth is, while "drill" only tells you what a market calls it.

Is denim a twill?

Yes — denim is a warp-faced twill, classically 3/1, in which the warp is indigo-dyed and the weft left undyed. The twill structure is what makes denim behave like denim: the indigo warp dominates the face while the pale weft shows on the back, and wear on the long warp floats produces the characteristic fade. Blends run here too — a 98/2 cotton–poly runs in denim and twill alike.

What GSM is cotton twill?

There is no single cotton-twill GSM — the family runs from shirting weights to heavy workwear cloth, so treat any band as indicative. Is gabardine a twill?

Yes — gabardine is a fine, steep, warp-faced twill with a prominent, closely set diagonal, used for dress trousers and rainwear. It sits at the refined end of the same family whose coarse end is drill. Canvas and duck, by contrast, are plain weaves — heaviness alone never makes a cloth a twill.
