Chino Fabric: What to Specify and Why

Chino fabric is a bottom-weight built for comfort rather than protection. Ours is 98% cotton / 2% spandex at 150–230 GSM, in three constructions — 30 × 30 + 40D, 30 × 16 + 70D and 21 × 16 + 70D. The spandex is there for stretch; the light weight is there so the garment is comfortable. The + figure is the elastane filament denier.

What does a chino have to do?

A chino is a trouser somebody wears all day by choice. That is a different brief from workwear, which is a trouser somebody wears because the job requires it — and the difference shows up in every line of the specification. Nothing here is being asked to survive abrasion, snagging or an industrial laundry. It is being asked to move with the wearer and stay comfortable for twelve hours.

Those two demands produce the two decisions that define the cloth. The garment has to give where the body bends — at the seat, the knee and the waist — which is why there is elastane in a fabric that is otherwise all cotton. And it has to stay light, because a bottom-weight that gets heavy stops being comfortable long before it stops being durable. Everything below follows from those two.

Worth naming the boundary before the numbers: this is a comfort specification, not a protective one. If the trouser is going into heavy-duty or industrial use, the brief inverts — strength leads, elastane usually comes off the specification entirely, and the cloth is a different animal. Three cells are held rather than published, and it is worth saying why rather than leaving it to look like an omission. Thread density, weave and route are not properties of "chino fabric" — they are properties of one quality on one processing route, and a number printed here would be wrong for half the fabrics it got copied onto. The finished width is held the same way. The lines that are stated above are the ones that hold across the end use, which is exactly what makes them worth publishing.

One more line lives per quality rather than on this page: which direction the elastane runs. A stretch woven can carry its elastane in the weft, in the warp, or in both, and it changes which way the finished trouser gives. We confirm it per quality — and if your pattern depends on it, say so in the brief rather than assuming.

What does the + 70D in a chino construction mean?

It is the elastane. The number is its denier — the thickness of the individual spandex filament — and it is not part of the cotton construction at all. Read "30 × 16 + 70D" as: 30s cotton in the warp, 16s cotton in the weft, plus a 70-denier elastane filament. Three facts, not three counts.

The trap in that line is that its two halves use numbering systems that run in opposite directions, and nothing in the notation warns you:

  • Cotton counts are indirect — higher means finer. The count says how many fixed lengths of yarn make up a fixed weight, so the more of them it takes, the thinner each one is. 30s is a finer yarn than 21s; 16s is coarser than both.
  • Denier is direct — higher means thicker. Denier is the weight in grams of 9,000 metres of the filament, so the bigger the number, the more filament there is. 70D is a thicker elastane than 40D, which is the reverse of what the cotton half of the same line has just taught you.
  • The percentage and the denier answer different questions. "2% spandex" is how much elastane there is by weight in the finished cloth. "70D" is how thick each filament is. A cloth can hold the same 2% with a different denier, and it will not behave the same.

This matters commercially more than it looks. A buyer comparing two quotations, one at + 40D and one at + 70D, is not comparing a detail — those are different filaments doing the stretch, in cloths that will not feel the same in the hand or behave the same on a body. If a quotation gives you a composition but no denier, the elastane specification is incomplete, and the gap will be filled by whoever weaves it.

How do the three chino constructions compare?

They form a progression rather than a menu, and they coarsen one thing at a time. Where each one lands inside the 150–230 GSM band depends on its thread density and finishing route, which are confirmed per quality — coarser yarn alone does not fix a weight.

Read it with the count rule in hand and the logic is plain. The warp count falls from 30s to 30s to 21s and the weft from 30s to 16s to 16s — and because cotton counts run backwards, a falling number means a thickening yarn. The middle construction changes one direction; the last changes both. The elastane thickens once, at the same step the weft does, and then stays put.

Which is why the useful question is not "which is best". It is where in the band does your garment sit. A light summer chino and a structured autumn one are the same brief at two weights, and the progression above is how the cloth gets from one to the other — by count and density, not by adding a different fibre. The exact weight any of the three lands at depends on its density and finishing route, which is why those are confirmed per quality.

Why is there 2% spandex in a chino?

Because the spandex is there for stretchability — that is its whole job. Cotton on its own has very little give: it will stretch a small amount and then stay stretched, which is how a rigid cotton trouser ends up bagged at the knee and the seat by the end of a day. The elastane is what lets the cloth move with the body instead of being deformed by it.

The figure is small on purpose. 2% is a comfort figure, not a performance one. It is not there to make an activewear garment or to hit a stated elongation target — it is there so the trouser gives where the wearer bends. If your garment genuinely needs a measured stretch and recovery specification, that is a different conversation and it needs to be in the brief, because it changes the construction rather than being a note on top of it.

Two consequences worth knowing before you order. First, the elastane and the light weight are working on the same problem from different directions — the stretch gives comfort in movement, the low GSM gives comfort in sheer wear — which is why the specification holds both and why pushing the weight up to "make it feel better quality" works against the brief. Second, an elastane cloth is not neutral downstream: it constrains what dyeing and finishing can do to it, which is why the route is agreed per programme rather than assumed.

What goes wrong if you specify chino fabric badly?

  • You write the composition and leave the denier off. "98/2 cotton-spandex" does not say whether the elastane is a 40D or a 70D filament, and two cloths at the same percentage with different deniers are not the same cloth.
  • You read the + figure as another yarn count. It is not one, and it does not even run the same way: higher denier means thicker filament, while higher cotton count means finer yarn. The one construction line carries both systems.
  • You order by GSM alone. Weight is the outcome of counts and density. Two of these constructions can be brought to a similar figure and still feel different in the hand, because the weight is arranged differently.
  • You assume which way the stretch runs. Weft, warp or both is a property of the individual quality. If the pattern depends on it, it belongs in the brief — not in the assumptions.
  • You push the weight up to make it feel more substantial. The light weight is a deliberate comfort decision, not an oversight. Adding grams to a comfort trouser subtracts the thing it was specified for.
  • You leave the route until the cloth exists. Elastane constrains what dyeing and finishing can do, so a route settled afterwards is a route settled by whoever is running that week.

The band is deliberately light: the garment is specified for all-day comfort, so weight is kept down rather than added for the feel of substance. Where a given quality lands inside the band follows from its counts, its thread density and its finishing route.

Why do chinos have 2% spandex?

For stretchability. Cotton on its own gives very little and tends to stay stretched, which is how rigid trousers bag at the knee and seat. The 2% is a comfort figure rather than a performance one — it lets the cloth move with the body, not hit a measured elongation target.
