Choosing the Base Fabric for Digital and Rotary Printing
A print base — the prepared fabric a design is printed onto — is chosen by the print route, not the other way round. Digital printing needs a smooth, dense, evenly prepared face with route-specific pretreatment; rotary tolerates a broader base but carries a 3,000m minimum against digital's 100m per colour per design; sublimation additionally requires a suitable polyester base. Fix the route first: the route defines the preparation.

What must a print base do that a dyeing base does not?
Dyeing asks the whole cloth to absorb colour evenly; printing asks the surface to hold a design in place. That adds three demands a dyeing base never faces. First, surface uniformity: ink sits where it lands, so every slub, nep and density variation prints. Second, controlled surface absorbency: too absorbent and lines bleed, too repellent and colour sits up and rubs off — which is why print bases carry route-specific pretreatment rather than generic preparation. Third, dimensional stability through the machine: a cloth that skews or stretches under tension prints a distorted repeat that no operator can correct afterwards.

The minimums are decision inputs, not sales lines: at 100m per colour per design, a multi-design digital capsule is reachable at a scale rotary's screen engraving can never serve — and at genuine volume the economics reverse. The base follows the same split: what digital demands of the face, rotary often forgives.
Why does construction density decide print definition?
Ink lands on yarns and the gaps between them. On an open, coarse construction a fine line falls partly into the gaps, spreads along the yarns and breaks at every crossing — the edge that looks crisp on screen prints ragged. On a dense, even face — a high ends-and-picks shirting construction such as a poplin — the same line lands on a nearly continuous surface and holds its edge. The rule of thumb that follows: the finer the artwork detail, the denser and more even the face must be, and no printer setting compensates for a base that is too open for the design.
Buyers assume a blurry print is a printing fault. Often the base was wrong — and reprinting the same artwork on the same base reproduces the same blur. The check is procedural, not optical: match the artwork's finest line to the construction class before purchase, then prove it with a strike-off on the actual base — never on a substitute cloth.

Is PFD one product?
No — and treating it as one is how the wrong base gets bought. PFD (Prepared for Dyeing/Printing) means prepared to the requirement of one named route: a base pretreated for reactive printing is not automatically suitable for pigment or disperse work, and none of them rescues an unsuitable fibre — sublimation requires a suitable polyester base regardless of pretreatment. What does the print route imply for order size?
The base decision and the quantity decision are the same decision seen twice. Digital's 100m per colour per design minimum means a launch can carry several designs on one prepared base quality — the base is bought once and the designs vary. Rotary's 3,000m minimum means the design set is small and the base volume is large, so a base fault multiplies across the whole run: the cheaper place to catch it is the strike-off, not the bulk.

How do you specify a print base so the printer does not guess?
- 1. Name the route and ink system — digital or rotary; reactive, pigment or disperse; sublimation declared explicitly (it fixes the fibre).
- 2. State the artwork demand — finest line width, photographic gradients, coverage — so the construction class can be matched to it.
- 3. Ask the printing unit to state the base requirement in writing — pretreatment, whiteness, absorbency, width and heat-set state where relevant — before the base is bought.
- 4. Approve a strike-off on the actual base construction, and write that construction into the approval.
- 5. Confirm shrinkage and handfeel after fixation and any wash-off the route requires — most print routes are also wet processes, and the finished figures are measured after them.

What is the best fabric for digital textile printing?
There is no single best — the base must match the artwork and the ink system. Fine detail needs a dense, even, smooth face with the pretreatment the printer names for that ink chemistry. Give the printer the artwork demand and ask them to state the base requirement in writing.
What is PFD fabric?
Prepared for Dyeing/Printing — a base prepared to the requirement of one named route: a stated pretreatment, whiteness and absorbency. It is a category, not a single product; a base prepared for one ink system may fail another, so the route must be fixed before PFD is bought.
Why is my print blurry on cotton?
Commonly the base, not the printer: fine lines break up on an open or uneven construction, and wrong or missing pretreatment lets ink bleed or sit up. Reprinting on the same base reproduces the fault — re-check construction density and pretreatment against the artwork first.
What is the minimum quantity for digital printing?

Can I print directly on greige fabric?
No — greige still carries size, waxes and uneven absorbency, so ink cannot reach the fibre evenly. A print base is prepared cloth with route-specific pretreatment; printing loom-state cloth risks patchy colour, broken edges and fastness failures.
