Choosing Fabric by End Use
Choosing fabric by end use means specifying backwards. Start from what the finished garment must survive — heavy-duty wear, repeated sweat, a hot summer — and let that requirement fix the composition, then the weave, then the weight, then the dye and finish route. The garment sets the question; the construction is the answer. Fabric chosen the other way round, from a swatch that felt right, fails in wear.

Why is fabric chosen backwards from the garment?
Because a fabric has no qualities in the abstract — only qualities relative to a job. Strength is a virtue in a work trouser and dead weight in a summer blouse. Coolness is the whole point of a lawn and irrelevant in a heavy drill. Ask "is this a good fabric?" and there is no answer; ask "what does this garment have to survive?" and the specification follows almost mechanically.
So every page in this cluster runs the same chain in the same order, because it is the order that keeps a later choice from quietly cancelling an earlier one. In practice a buyer often arrives with the weight already fixed — the chain still applies, it just starts mid-way. Composition is decided first because no weave rescues the wrong fibre. Weave comes next because it decides how the cloth carries load at a given weight. Weight follows from both. The dye and finish route comes last, because it is the only step that can be specified after the cloth exists — and it is the step buyers most often leave off the order entirely.

Read down the table and you have a brief. Read it upwards and you have the commonest failure mode in fabric sourcing: a buyer who has fallen for a handfeel, then works backwards to justify it, and discovers in wear that the cloth was answering a different question.

Which end uses are covered here?

Read the last two together and the cluster's central claim stops being an assertion. Shirting and summer lawn are the same fibre in the same 1/1 plain weave — 100% cotton, both — and their handle is opposite: shirting at 40 × 40 / 120 × 60 is stiff with body, lawn at 60 × 60 / 102 × 84 is soft and flowy. Nothing separates them but counts and densities. That is the strongest evidence this library can offer that the composition line on a quotation tells you what a fabric is made of and almost nothing about what it will do.
What happens when the end use is not stated?
- The composition defaults to the cheapest compliant option. Nobody is being dishonest — with no stated requirement there is nothing to trade against, so cost wins by default.
- The weave stops being a decision. Whatever the loom is set up for becomes the answer, and two cloths at identical count and density behave very differently under load.
- The dye class is never discussed. This is the one that shows up latest and costs most, because it surfaces after the garment has been sold and worn, not at inspection.
- The tolerances get argued about instead of agreed. Without a stated end use there is no basis for deciding which deviations matter, so every deviation becomes negotiable.

How do you brief an end use that is not covered here?

- The garment — not the fabric family. "Chef's jacket", "school shirt", "summer dress lining" tells us more than "a nice cotton twill".
- What it must survive — the conditions, not the adjectives. Industrial laundry, sustained heat, sweat, pulling and snagging, repeated washing at home.
- Any figure that is genuinely fixed — a finished GSM, a finished width, a construction you are already matching. Say which are hard requirements and which are inherited from someone else's quotation.
- The downstream route — dyed, printed, or bought greige for your own processing. This decides which minimums apply before it decides anything else.
- A physical reference if you have one — and, more usefully, what you did and did not like about it in wear.

Frequently asked questions
How do I choose the right fabric for a garment?
Work backwards. State what the garment must survive, then let that fix the composition, the weave, the count, density and weight, and finally the dye and finish route. Each step constrains the next, so deciding them in that order stops a later choice quietly cancelling an earlier one.
Why does the end use have to be on the enquiry?
Because without it there is nothing to trade against. Composition defaults to the cheapest compliant option, the weave defaults to whatever is running, and the dye class is never discussed at all — which is the failure that surfaces after the garment has been worn, not at inspection.
Is a higher GSM always a better fabric?
No. Weight is an outcome of the end use, not a quality score. A work trouser needs body a summer blouse would be ruined by, and a lawn is specified light on purpose. The right weight is the lowest one that still does the garment’s job.
Can the same fabric work for workwear and summer wear?
Rarely, because the two briefs pull in opposite directions. Workwear wants tear and tensile strength, which points at a polyester blend in a twill; summer wear wants coolness at a low weight, which points at 100% cotton in a plain weave. One cloth answering both usually does neither well.

Does the fibre or the construction decide how a fabric feels?
The construction, far more than buyers expect. Our shirting and our summer lawn are both 100% cotton in a 1/1 plain weave, yet one is stiff and one is flowy — the only differences are the yarn counts and the thread densities. A composition line alone predicts very little about handle.
What if my garment is not one you have written about?
