Summer Ladies Wear Fabric: Cotton Lawn
Summer ladies wear fabric for a hot Asian climate is cotton lawn: 100% cotton, 60×60/102×84, plain 1/1 weave, 80–90 GSM, reactive dyed. It has to be light enough for the heat and not see-through — opacity is what stops the weight going lower, checked on a sample in the final shade. What does a summer ladies garment have to survive?
Asian summer weather is harsh, so the fabric has to be light — that part is obvious to everyone, including the buyer who then orders the lightest thing on the swatch card. The requirement that gets forgotten is the second one: it must not be see-through. Opacity is not a bonus at this weight. It is a hard constraint, and it is the one that stops the weight going any lower.
Those two demands are in direct tension, and the whole specification below is the resolution of that tension. Every line exists either to take weight out or to keep cover in. Get the balance wrong in one direction and the garment is hot; get it wrong in the other and the garment has to be lined — which puts back all the weight the lawn was chosen to remove.

Why cotton and not polyester for summer wear?
Because cotton absorbs moisture and polyester does not — and in humid heat that difference is what the wearer feels, whatever the construction weighs. This is the single most useful thing on this page, and it is also the decision buyers most often get wrong, because polyester makes an extremely good first impression.
It is worth being precise about why the mistake is so easy to make. Even the lightest polyester construction can feel good in the hand. On a swatch card, at a desk, in an air-conditioned showroom, it is smooth, it drapes, it looks like the right answer, and it usually costs less. Nothing about that first impression is wrong — it is just measuring the wrong thing.
What the swatch cannot show you is how the fibre behaves on a warm body over hours. Polyester's properties are hot, and over time the garment becomes itchy and irritating to wear. The buyer's complaint never arrives as "the fabric is too light" or "the construction is wrong" — it arrives as customers who bought the garment once and did not come back. Cotton is specified here precisely because its coolness comes from moisture the fibre actually takes up, not from something a lighter construction can be asked to supply. Engineered wicking and micro-denier polyesters are built to manage that moisture and are the normal choice for hot-weather performance wear — a conventional light polyester woven, which is what gets substituted here, is not one of them.
Note how directly this contradicts the fibre logic on our workwear page, and how correct both are. There, polyester is the majority fibre because tear and tensile strength decide whether the garment survives; the heat it brings is offset by the cotton in the blend and accepted as the price of durability. Here there is nothing to offset it and nothing to trade it against — so the same fibre that is the right answer for a work trouser is the wrong answer for a summer shirt. The fibre did not change. The question did.

How does a fabric stay light without being see-through?
Not by weight — by how the weight is arranged. Cover at 80–90 GSM comes from three specification lines working together, which is why none of them can be traded away on its own:
- Fine yarns (60 × 60). Finer yarn means more threads can occupy the same inch for the same mass. Fineness is what makes a high thread count affordable in grams.
- A high density (102 × 84). This is the cover itself — the number of threads actually standing between the light and the eye. Cut the density to save weight and what you remove is cover, not heat.
- A 1/1 plain weave. Plain weave interlaces every end with every pick, so it gives the most closed, most even surface any weave can produce at a given count and density. That evenness is what stops a light cloth reading as translucent in patches.
Those three lines buy the cover. Whether the finished cloth then reads as opaque is settled on an approved sample in the final shade, because at this weight shade and finish move opacity as much as the construction does — a pale ground reads through where a deep one does not. Which is why "make it lighter" is not a specification instruction: it is a request to break one of these three, and the buyer rarely gets to choose which one breaks. If a garment genuinely needs to sit below this band, the honest conversation is about lining or about accepting some sheerness by design, not about quietly shaving the density and hoping.
The same three lines also decide how the cloth moves. Lawn is flowy because 60s yarns are fine, and fine yarns bend easily. Take the same 100% cotton in the same 1/1 plain weave, coarsen the yarn to 40s and reset the density to 120 × 60, and you get shirting: stiff, with body, at 95–120 GSM. Same fibre, same weave, opposite handle — the construction is doing all of the work.

One more caution: judge this by full specification, not by the market name. "Lawn" is a commercial family name in our trade rather than a protected standard, and where the lawn, cambric and poplin boundaries sit differs by market — so a lawn quoted from a European spec sheet may not be the cloth described above.

What happens after weaving — dyed or printed?
Dyed, the class is reactive — the standard route for cotton, where the dye bonds to the cellulose rather than sitting on the surface of it. Printed, the cloth takes a print route instead of a dye bath. The finish is specified per order, because what a lawn needs depends on the garment the customer is building, not on the construction: it is the one line we deliberately do not fix for the quality. What is not open to interpretation is what each route commits you to in metres, and at 80–90 GSM this cloth sits below the weight step in our dyeing minimums:
- Digital print — 100m per colour, per design. The lowest-commitment route, and why a light printed lawn is a realistic first programme for a small brand. (Our 100m minimum also covers sublimation, but sublimation needs a polyester base — it is not a route for this cloth.)
- Rotary print — 3,000m. A different economic proposition entirely; the design count, not the fabric, usually decides which print route fits.
- Dyeing — 1,500m per colour. Our dyeing minimum steps at 160 GSM, and lawn at 80–90 GSM falls under that step, so it takes the lower of the two figures.

What goes wrong if you specify summer lawn badly?
- You chase the weight down without re-checking opacity. Lighter cloth in a pale shade is where see-through garments come from — and a lining puts back the weight you removed, with a cost you did not plan for.
- You substitute a light polyester on hand feel. It feels good in the hand, wears hot, and turns itchy and irritating over time. The complaint arrives as repeat customers who do not return, which is the hardest kind to diagnose.
- You cut the density to save cost. Density is the cover. This is the single change most likely to turn an approved lawn into a see-through one, and it is invisible on a small swatch held flat.
- You order by market name. "Lawn" is a commercial family name, not a protected specification, and the boundaries move by market — so a lawn from one spec sheet is not necessarily the cloth described here.
- You approve a swatch without holding it to light. Opacity is the one property of this fabric that a flat cutting on a desk will never show you.
- You leave the route until after the cloth is woven. The route decides the minimums, and the minimums decide how many colours and designs the range can carry — so it belongs in the brief, not after it.
