Cotton Poplin
Cotton poplin is a tightly woven plain-weave fabric with a fine, smooth face and a subtle crosswise rib, made by weaving more warp ends than weft picks. It is not a single standard cloth — the same “poplin” can feel crisp or soft depending on construction and finish. Widely used for shirting, uniforms and printed apparel where a clean surface matters, and typically landing around 90–120 GSM.

How it is constructed
Poplin’s character comes from an unbalanced plain weave: the warp carries more threads per inch than the weft, which produces the fine face and the light horizontal rib. Because the notation “poplin” says nothing about yarn count or thread density on its own, two fabrics with the same name can behave very differently. The constructions below are ones buyers commonly request — they’re a starting point for a specification, not a performance guarantee.

Count and construction: the two numbers that define a poplin
A poplin specification carries two pairs of numbers, and they answer different questions. The yarn count — the 40 × 40 in 40 × 40 / 120 × 60 — describes how fine the warp and weft yarns are (cotton count, Ne; higher means finer). The construction — the 120 × 60 — describes how densely they are woven: ends of warp and picks of weft per inch. Poplin’s character comes from more ends than picks; a warp-dominant construction like 120 × 60 is typical, though balanced heavier constructions are also sold under the name. In 40 × 40 / 120 × 60 the warp is twice as dense as the weft, and that imbalance is what produces the fine crosswise rib on the face.
Across the constructions buyers most often request (table above), counts run from 30s at the heavier end to 45s at the finer end, with 40 × 40 a widely used general shirting base. At the same count, combed yarn gives a cleaner, smoother cloth than carded — one reason two quotes for the “same” 40 × 40 poplin can differ.
Yarn count is not “thread count”
A retail “thread count” is usually the ends and picks added together — on that basis a 40 × 40 / 133 × 72 poplin reads as roughly 205 — though counting conventions vary by seller. That one figure hides the two things a mill actually needs: yarn fineness and the warp/weft split. A 205 woven as 133 × 72 and a 205 woven as 110 × 95 are different fabrics, with different handle, cover and print surface. If your target spec arrives as a single thread-count number, send it anyway with your end use and target handle — or a physical cutting — and we’ll work back to a suitable construction and confirm it in writing before development.
How count and construction set the weight
GSM is an outcome, not an input. Coarser yarns and denser picking put more cotton into each square metre: the table above lists 30 × 30 / 68 × 68 for heavier applications and the 45s constructions for lighter handle. Two identical constructions can still finish at different weights, because finishing route and shrinkage change the cloth after weaving. That is why we quote GSM as approximate and per specific quality — across the 1,583 qualities in our catalogue, weight is confirmed against the actual fabric, never read off the name “poplin”.
What to specify when sourcing
Construction and “100% cotton” alone won’t get you a repeatable fabric. A complete poplin brief names:
- End use — what garment is it? This decides whether the construction even suits.
- Finish — soft, crisp, peach, silicon. The single most-missed line, and the one that caused the mismatch above.
- Exact construction — warp/weft count and ends/picks, not just “40×40 poplin”.
- Target weight — if you have one; note it’s an outcome of construction and finish, not an input you set independently.
- Width — finished width you need.
- Colouration — reactive or pigment.
- Shrinkage & colour-fastness — any limits or buyer testing standards to meet.
Common sourcing mistakes
Treating “100% cotton poplin” as a finished specification. Judging poplin by GSM alone — that’s also how buyers confuse it with lawn or cambric, which can share a weight band but differ in yarn and hand. Assuming all poplin is soft shirting; the finish decides that. And approving a swatch without pinning the bulk finish, which is how a correct construction still ends up rejected.

Sourcing poplin as a small brand
Poplin’s ≈ 90–120 GSM band puts it under our 160 GSM dyeing threshold, which is the single most useful commercial fact about it for a small buyer: a custom dyed poplin colourway starts at 1,500m per colour, not 3,000m. Digital and sublimation printing on poplin start at 100m per colour, per design; rotary becomes relevant from 3,000m. If your reference is quoted in ounces, convert with 1 oz/yd² = 33.906 GSM — a 3 oz shirting is ≈ 102 GSM, squarely in the poplin band.
- Below 1,500m per colour? Take an available dyed or RFD poplin quality rather than commissioning a dye lot. This is the most common workable route for a first launch.
- Several designs, small quantities? Digital printing on one shared poplin base beats several separate dyed colourways — one base, one approval, one construction to reorder against.
- Want the custom shade anyway? Reducing four colourways to two halves the committed fabric without changing the base, and usually reads as a tighter collection.
